Conferences of the Smartnet Network
===================================
April 1, 1993
The following list contains a brief description of the various forums
presently available through the Smartnet network. Not all nodes, (BBS
systems), of the network have chosen to select all the available forums for
their local boards. Check with the individual nodes of the network as to what
they are carrying. Contact the sysop of the node as to their availability of
taking on a particular forum. As the network continues to grow, there will be
a SMARTNET network node near you!

Information Network, the International HUB of Smartnet at (516) 536-8723.
Please understand that the reference numbers used here only match those at
SOM. These numbers are only used as a reference and will NOT match those
found on your local Smartnet BBS.
Message Base
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
0. Main Board - Each individual node or system of the network supports
their own main board. The main board of the network
serves as a local meeting place for local callers to the
bbs. Main Boards of individual Smartnet systems are not
shared in the network.
1. Sysop's - Supports a thread regarding Bulletin Board Software.
Topics of conversation include all facets of the Sysop's
world in operating a bulletin board from PCBoard software
to file transfer problems.
2. Games - Everyone likes to take a break now and then on their CRT.
Games discussions include both online through-a-door games
available on member boards of the network as well as
assistance of the commercially available games. Games
released to the bulletin boards are also discussed and the
discussions are also readily available in the forum.
3. Music - Another general interest forum that specializes in all
topics of music, from a full discussion of computer music
to the latest rock and roll and classical pieces. MIDI
and ad- lib card discussions are continued directly in the
MIDI Conference.
4. Video-VGA - VGA & VIDEO Conference is dedicated to all discussions of
CRT display. Discussions within this forum include .GIF,
.MAC and other graphic display programs, the ANSI driver,
as well as the current state of the art displays; VGA,
EGA, CGA and MCA. Graphical drawing software is also
discussed within this conference in addition to the
Presentation Software Conference. Other Video related
conferences include: DTP, CAD and Presentations.
5. Invest - A complete discussion of finances and investments, this
forum has a broad range of topics that span financial
programming to investment information. You'll find some
interesting discussions on financial assistance.
6. DESQview - PRODUCT SUPPORT - hosted by Eric Weiling of Quarterdeck
Office Systems, Inc., this conference openly discusses the
DESQview program and the new API programming interface to
DESQview. Other multi-tasking software is discussed
within this conference.
7. DESQview API - Applications Programing Interface an advanced programers
conference for GUI programing interfacing. This
conference welcomes all those who are interested in
programing for Windows 3.0, DESQview, DESQview X, OS/2
among others.
9. Hayes - PRODUCT SUPPORT - hosted by Randy Cooper of Hayes
Microcomputer Products, Inc., this forum is dedicated to
the Smartmodem and the new "V" series Smartmodems,
Smartcom II and III, and all the products manufactured by
Hayes.
10. Desktop - Discussions for DESKTOP publishing and its many facets.
Everything from Laser Printers, fonts, complete desktop
packages such as Ventura 3.0 and Pagemaker 3.0 to First
Publisher and other desktop publishing packages. Fonts
and postscript in addition to other DTP supporting
products are also included.
11. Network - Linking more than one PC to another involves a network of
some sort. This forum is open to the general discussion
of networks from the simplest to the most complex
applications. Novell Netware and Microsoft LAN Manager
are always areas of interest within this conference.
Whether you're in the market for purchasing a network or
just trouble-shooting your present configuration, this
conference is the location for you to visit.
12. Pascal - One of the most popular programming languages now taught
in most computer science courses, Pascal is a favorite
among many professionals as well as novice programmers.
The discussions in this forum range from the latest
updates in compilers to debugging problems and solutions.
13. Borland - Hosted by Juan Jiminenz this conference discusses all the
products of Borland, in addition to their various
programming languages.
14. HDrive - Hard Drive technology and installations. Discussions from
all types of hard drives to controller cards and their
formatting. All types of problem solving from hard disk
failure to formatting procedures. See also the SCSI
interface conference.
15. HPackard - PRODUCT SUPPORT CONFERENCE - Hewlett Packard Conference is
open to a complete discussion of Hewlett Packard Products,
from laser printers and scanners to calculators.
Conference moderator is Ed Boston of the Hewlett Packard
Company.
16. Legal - Legal and Law forum hosted by Reginald Hirsch of Ye Old
Baily BBS of Houston, Texas. This forum discusses all
aspects of law with particular attentions to law and data
communications.
17. Basic - Quick Basic and Basic conference which discusses all
aspects of Basic programing.
18. Medical - Medicine and the medical sciences are discussed in this
forum. An important aspect to our daily lives with
qualified physicians and members of the medical profession
available for open discussions on topics that concern our
daily lives.
19. Unix - A forum dedicated to the Unix environment which is
becoming one of the leading environments in the multi-user
environment. Topics include all facets of the unix
environment.
20. CAD - Computer Aided Design, a specific area of engineering and
the PC computer. Video and graphic support for CAD are
discussed in this forum. Products from Autocad to the
shareware programs are utilized in this forum.
21. -C- - "C" programming language and the related topics of C are
discussed in this forum. From the novice programmer to the
professional are welcomed in this conference.
22. dBase - A conference for all data bases from Ashton Tate's dBase
IV to the shareware programs. This forum discusses the
programming and operations of data bases. See also the
Clipper Conference.
23. Qmodem - PRODUCT SUPPORT FORUM hosted by John Friel and the Forbin
Project, this conference discusses one of the most popular
communications programs for communicating with bulletin
boards and other host systems.
24. PKware - PRODUCT SUPPORT FORUM hosted by Phil Katz, author of the
PK compression routines. This conference discusses all of
the PK products and is supported directly by the author.
25. WP51 - WordPerfect 5.1 Conference directly supports all of the
products of WordPerfect Corporation, with particular
attention to the word processor. This conference is hosted
by Michael Reuben, discusses all products from the
WordPerfect Corporation in addition to its various word
processing products.
27. OS/2 - The subject matter of the conference is all versions of
OS/2 including OS/2 V1.x and the most recent OS/2 V2.x
version. David Matocha, is the conference host of this
forum and has many hands on experiences.
28. PC-MFrame - PC to Mainframe communications. A topic that has long been
neglected in the BBS world and one that is equally
important. The conference is hosted by Bob Moskowitz, who
is well versed in main frame to PC communications. A high
end technology conference for those involved with IRMA
boards and other communication devices with main frames,
midis, VAX and major computing needs.
29. Multimedia - Presentation Graphic Software, a new and open discussion
on the Smartnet Network, dedicated to Slide Show and
"presentations"
30. HamRadio - This forum is an open discussion on ham radios and short
wave communications. Many related topics are discussed in
this forum.
31. Travel - Like more information on traveling and where and when to
go to a particular spot! This is the forum, hosted by
Richard Brown of Travel-On-Line BBS, St. Louis, Missouri.
A fabulous forum full of information for journeying all
around the nation and the globe.
32. IBM - An open forum full of discussions of various topics
regarding the IBM PC computer. This conference is from
soup to nuts full of data from hardware and software, and
the location to find the latest product releases from IBM.
33. -123- - This forum is open to all products of Louts Development
and is supported by the various members of the Smartnet
Network. In addition to spreadsheets, Lotus Magellan,
Freelance and other products are discussed.
34. ExtBATCHFiles- Hosted by Bob Moskowitz from SOM, this conference relates
to all those .BAT files that you try to write and just
don't operate as they should. Support batch file programs
are equally discussed within this conference.
35. Scuba -
37. SADMDSI - Shareware Authors Den of Moral Decay and Software
Iniquity (SADMDSI) is a haven for shareware authors to
discuss the many venture of the shareware market. Wrote a
program? Want to market it? How do you spread it through
the land and try to make a profit with it at the same
time. This is the place for more details from the novice
to the professional shareware authors. There all here.
And best yet, Judy Getts, contributing author to PC-World
Magazine is your conference host. Judy has written many
fine articles and given many speeches regarding the
shareware field. This is a must to visit forum.
38. HST - U.S.Robotics product support forum discusses the HST
modems and their communications parameters. Not directly
supported by the U.S. Robotics Corporation, but assisted
by the many owners of their modems.
39. SmartNet - The International HUB of the SMARTNET network, this forum
serves as the meeting place for all the SMARTNET network
sysops to PUBLICLY discuss the topics and forums of the
network. Users are invited to participate within this
conference to enhance all areas of Smartnet.
40. Disabled - Sponsored by Michael Sussell, Invention Factory BBS -
discusses the many important topics of assistance for the
"handicap and disabled". Topics from improving PC
utilization to improvements in the daily lifestyles of the
disabled. This forum is maintained by users who are
directly involved with the disabled on a professional
level.
41. Qmail - PRODUCT SUPPORT FORUM - open to all discussions of QMAIL &
QMAIL DELUXE, the reader program distributed through the
SMARTNET network. Hosted by Mark (Sparky) Herring, this
forum openly discusses all uses of Qwikmail as well as the
supporting editor programs needed for Qwikmail Deluxe and
as an option to QMAIL.
42. Writers - A forum open to Writers that discusses the various
writing techniques both with a computer and without.
Creativity is a topic that is not forgotten in this forum.
43. ChitChat - Anything goes in this forum, from politics to sex and
religion, this fast moving forum always has some heated
discussions which users from all over the international
network are always involved. A very active forum which
can generate over 100 messages a day.
44. Cameras - Photography conference for members of the SMARTNET network
who have interests in photography. All facets of the
hobby are discussed by hobbyists as well as authorities.
45. Telemate - PRODUCT SUPPORT CONFERENCE -- Hosted by Windfred Hu,
author of Telemate, this conference entertains all
discussions of this fabulous telecommunications program.
46. FishNet - Hosted by Barry Miller, Sysop of the Big Apple BBS, this
forum discusses the finesse of raising tropical fish and
the care that has to be taken in the hobby to properly
enjoy the them.
47. Vern Buerg - Support Conference hosted by Vern Buerg, author of the
many utilities that we use on a daily basis to enhance our
personal computing. Author of LIST.COM and many other
popular utilities, this forum is a direct support forum
with the author through the Smartnet Network.
48. WindowsNovice- Information and help for the new Windows user.
49. Consults - The Consultants Corner, a forum which is available to all
consultants with a wide range of topics that interest
individuals and corporations that secure earnings through
consultations.
50. Interntl - The International Conference is the forum open to all
members of the SMARTNET network that wish to continue
conversations in OTHER languages than English. A chance to
visit our foreign visitors and converse in their native
language. An excellent opportunity to expand your foreign
language conversation within this conference.
51. Virus - An important forum for the BBS user, this forum openly
discusses the problems of the computer virus and the many
dangers that can be found with them. Hosted by John
Redford through SOM.
52. Sports - Every sport is discussed in this forum from the
professional teams to the many individual sports, everyone
has a chance to voice themselves regarding their favorite
team, or to discuss their favorite equipment. You name it,
regarding sports, it will be found in this forum.
53. ForSale - Now everyone's looking for a bargain, and the member
systems of the Smartnet network are no different. Have
something to sell or think you might be looking for
something in the next few days? This is the forum to
monitor on a regular basis. It's a shopping mall and a
bargain basement. The stakes are yours and the discounts
are there to be had. BBS ADS are also available in this
conference.
54. AT&T - AT&T equipment and software are the foci of this forum.
All products manufactured by AT&T and its subsidiaries are
spoken in this conference.
55. Soapbox - Another "bull roar" conference originating from Radio Free
Memphis BBS where all topics are discussed as in the
"Chit-Chat" conference. A different flavor than conference
#43 which everyone will enjoy. Definitely designed for a
forum in leisure.

57. Auto-Fix - Auto-fix, Hosted By GM tech Scott Meyers is designed to

90. Gay Issues - Hosted by John Wilkinson through the Smartnet Network,
this conference discusses the many issues that affect the
gay community in this nation.
91. DOS 6.0 - With the 1993 release of DOS 6.0 Microsoft has released
their hottest product to date. DOS 6.0 is taking the p.c.
world in a storm and this conference is now open for an
open discussion of the up's and down's of the new
operating system.
92. Star Trek - Smartnet Conference that addresses the ever popular
television and movie series. If you have a love for
science fiction and enjoy the journeys of the starships
then you should be sure to visit this forum on a regular
basis.
93. Robotics - A unique conference hosted by Eric Green of SOM, which

95. Vets - Veterans Administration - dedicated as a common conference
on the Smartnet Network for veterans to discuss the many
topics of common interest.
96. SciFi - Smartnet Conference open to discussions of science
fiction. Be sure to visit the Star Trek Conference also
available through Smartnet.
97. RBase - Microrim's RBase, a popular data base management system
supported through the Smartnet Network for those who
utilize this popular software package.
98. Markmail - PRODUCT SUPPORT CONFERENCE - Markmail is the popular E-
mail door supported on many Smartnet PCBoard systems for
users and Smartnet sysops alike to obtain their network
mail. This conference is especially important for those
who have minor problems in using the door, or are looking
to make their mail transfers more efficient.
99. 3 B's - 3B's (Beethoveen, Bach and Brahms) is the Smartnet
Classical music conference. Always an interesting
discussion available in this conference regarding the
current concert scene and classical music discography.
100. Game Design - The Game Design conference is for the purpose of
discussing designing games, designing modifications to
games, and designing constructs within games. This can
include computer games, board games, role playing games,
card games, games of chance, etc. Constructs to games can
be things like Mean- 18 golf courses, FRP universes, etc.
Modifications of games can be extensions or changes; a
simple example would be a discussion of the widely used
FREE PARKING modification in MONOPOLY.
101. Diplomacy - Diplomacy, one of the most online situation games, is
hosted by Bart Lidofsky, and is always active for those
who enjoy the popular strategy game.
102. QEdit - PRODUCT SUPPORT CONFERENCE - hosted by Tim Farley of
Semmware, Inc. - authors of the popular programming and
ASCII shareware editor through the Smartnet Network.
103. Quicken - One of the most popular financial management programs
available, and always on the top sellers list, this
conference is a user supported conference for those who
share interests in the program, and share ideas on their
various techniques.
104. Midi - An additional music conference dedicated to MIDI and
computer generated music. A must visit for those with
music composing cards and moog interests.
105. Dr. Dos -
106. X25-T1-ISDN - Advanced telecomputing conference for those involved with
professional data communications. Smartnet offers a unique
conference which not only covers the packet switching
networks but the new ISDN technology a well. Professionals
are invited to visit and enjoy this forum.
107. Compressions - Lharc and other popular data compression utilities now
being used by many personal computing programming
companies and now supported on many bulletin board
systems. An alternative to PKware and SEA products, this
compression utility has given some very interesting
results.
108 Clipper - With the release of Nantucket's Clipper 5.0 for dbase
programmers, this conference has become a very popular and
unique place for Clipper programmers from around the
Smartnet Network to meet and converse. If you are
interested in Clipper, dBase programming, visit this
conference on a regular basis.
110. SCSI - SCSI interfaces are fast becoming a new industry standard
for adding many peripherals from hard drives and CD ROM
drives to other external devices to your system. The
complexities are an ongoing discussion in this conference.
If you are interested in this new interface, visit the

111. Astronomy - Smartnet conference for those interested in viewing the
"real" stars in the sky. An active conference on the
Smartnet Network and a welcome to all star gazers.
112. Poli-Phil - Smartnet Conference hosted by Lester Garrett, discussing
"political viewpoints" open to all members of the Smartnet
Network where individual political beliefs and ideologies
are expressed in contrast to the Legal Conference. Where
the legal conference is based upon legal backgrounds and
laws, this conference is an ongoing open discussion of
political convictions and thoughts.
114. Hypertext - Smartnet Conference for the new HYPERTEXT programming
environment now becoming more and more popular with the
various graphical user interfaces. Welcome to programmers
and users to discuss shareware hypertext products in
addition to various problems and solutions with hypertext
programs.
115. Intellicomm - Smartnet Conference hosted by Wayne Duff, for the
telecommunications enhancement program Liberator for
Telix. Liberator is an advanced comm program which will
enhance your online time with your favorite Smartnet
system by automating many of your regular operations
through its powerful scripting capabilities.
116. QMManager - Hosted by Jack Mylnex, shareware product for managing your
Qmail offline reader mail packets. Shareware conference.
117. Cuisine - Smartnet Network Conference hosted by Julie Buerg,
discusses "all" types of cuisine and cooking. Have a great
recipe? Why not share it with the rest of the network.
